Our company has nearly 50 years’ experience in the rental (both hot and cold) of operating machines and lattice cranes for port work. Ports in major Italian cities as well as in the Mediterranean basin have been built with cranes and equipment (mostly customized) made or serviced by our workshop.

The project to complete the Sicilian city’s dock was ambitious from the start.

The specificity of the work required the use of three Sennebogen lattice cranes (2200, 3300, and 5500) of 80, 110, and 150 tons capacity, respectively.

Our technical department working closely with the client provided for the design and subsequent fabrication in the workshop of a PRECOPAL sheet pile driving jig, a retaining structure for casting iron sheet piles, and finally 8 formwork units for making 6.3mc weakly reinforced concrete boulders.

The Sennebogen 2200 crane, the smallest of the three, operates to drive in iron sheet piles, which are then cast using the retaining structure built ad-hoc for this purpose.

The second crane, Sennebogen 3300, is used for driving PRECOPAL® type sheet piles, these are special fiberglass and polymer reinforced sheet piles. With this type of construction and because of the total absence of steel, a 100-year service life and prolonged corrosion resistance is guaranteed ^[1].

The last of the three the Sennebogen 5500 (150-ton) is used in two different phases: the first preparation phase, which is the flattening of the seabed in preparation for the second phase, which is the placement of the reinforced concrete boulders that will be used as the base for the subsequent port structures.

Costa Concordia

The collective imagination well remembers the Costa Concordia shipwreck and the tragic events related to it.

During the “parabucking” (in technical jargon all operations intended to refloat and rotate) of the wreck, the question arose of where to have the ship, with its 50,000-ton tonnage, “rest” during this operation. Engineers in collaboration with technicians designed a system of metal supports (to give stability) and bags filled with liquid cement (to give the structure the right elasticity). Once the turning operations were completed, the sacks would be removed through two special slings placed at the ends, while the supports would be lifted through a crane placed on a pontoon boat.

Once the rotation took place and while the wreck of the ship was traveling to the Port of Genoa, the operators noticed that removal of the cushions could not take place as budgeted: using the special slings, the sacks would tear, spilling all their contents, still liquid cement, into the sea. A thorough inspection by our engineers designed the equipment (as always by building in a custom ) that can be seen in the photos:an “open” bivalve bucket with which the “cushions” could be removed by wrapping them completely.

One of our clients shows us a new project: the Port of Riva di Traiano. The Port, in addition to the classic docks, provided behind a ballast of Antifer blocks a series of vaulted arches, recalling thearchitecture of the great Rome of the emperors.

Unfortunately, the making of vaulted arches using the classical production system involved very high costs , both for woodwork and labor

After careful evaluation of the work, it was decided to cast 2 arches at the same time , followed by rapid gouging, as all casting structures moved on specially installed rails. It was the year 1985, and our company, in addition to being a supplier of the specific machinery (cranes, formwork, etc.), working closely with the construction company, was able to offer the kind of service that in our days is called “custom” ; evaluating, proposing and supporting our clients with the provision of the most suitable solutions for the implementation of their projects continues to distinguish our “mission.”
